If any director could successfully expand upon the genius of Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner, it is undoubtedly Denis Villeneuve. In Blade Runner 2049 he manages not only to surpass the visual impact of the first film but also brings new and deeper meaning to the original’s slightly confused philosophical concepts about artificial intelligence and what it means to be alive. That makes it one of the brainiest blockbusters to emerge from Hollywood in the past two decades, but never at any cost to its sheer spectacle and storytelling.
