With over 140 acres of woodland situated between Trowbridge and Westbury, Clanger Wood gives all nature explorers the perfect opportunity to discover something new. Renowned for its bluebells and butterflies, Clanger Wood has been made a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and was established in approximately 1086 – making your visit a walk through both history and nature.
The woodland has well-maintained paths, making it accessible to wheelchair users and pushchairs. If you decide to venture off the beaten track, there are little paths for you or the little ones to see what adventure awaits. Man’s best friend need not miss out – Clanger Wood is a lovely spot to walk the dogs and let them roam free, which does make this a free fun location for all the family.
Bluebells and Wildlife
Featuring on the Woodland Trust’s list of top ten sites for bluebells, Clanger Wood is a must-see between mid-April and the beginning of May. The woodland is famous for its bluebells, famed for being Wiltshire’s best butterfly spotting sites, and is a bustling home for over 30 different species of these fluttering wonders. The butterflies can be seen as spring turns into the summer months, and you might even be lucky enough to spot the rare silver-washed fritillary.
Keep an eye out for the narrow-bordered bee hawk moth during the day and looks like a giant bumble bee – it is one of over 300 species of moths that take flight in the woodland.
It’s not just butterflies and moths that you are looking out for . . . Clanger Wood is a twitcher’s dream, and home to the Willow Tit, Nuthatch, Green Woodpecker, Spotted Woodpecker, Sparrow hawk, and Tawny Owl.
