Grade II* listed A stone façade built in 1696 by Joseph Houlton encases what was originally late-Tudor-period Langford House, the birthplace of Mary Hyde (nee Langford). Her son Edward Hyde, later Lord Clarendon, was principal adviser to King Charles II, and her great-granddaughters were Queen Mary II (of “William & Mary”) and Queen Anne. Most of the house has been converted to residential accommodation and is not open to the public, but part of the ground floor has, for well over a century, housed retail premises. From 1930 until 2013, this was the Crowing Cock Café, a one-time Trowbridge landmark. A new restaurant is expected to open on that site at the end of 2023.d.
