Well, happy New Year, everyone! I sincerely hope that you all had a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas and were able to spend quality time with family and friends.

It’s quite easy to list all the formal Mayoral engagements that I’ve attended since my last proper blog. That’s a grand total of none! This is not really surprising, as the vast majority of our institutions around the town closed down for the holiday period.

But not all, and if we’re going to acknowledge anything about the last couple of weeks, it surely has to be that key services carried on while many of us enjoyed a well-earned) rest.

The doctor’s practices, chemists, and pharmacies were open, some even on Christmas Day itself.

The voluntary sector was active, offering shelter, hot food, and sustenance to those desperately in need.

The council teams were out sweeping our streets and emptying our binsThe only day they had off was Christmas Day itself!

And let’s not forget all those working across the town in the hospitality sector—in the pubs, clubs,, and restaurants many of us visited over the holidays. Their willingness to work while the rest of us were out celebrating was the only reason we were able to BE out celebrating!

I hope that the one thing we can all agree on is that we owe all these people, and all the others who carried on working during the holiday period, a debt of gratitude.

So from me, on behalf of the residents of Trowbridge who (like me) were sitting at home eating too much and binge watching Netflix (other streaming services are available)…. thank you!

I said it was going to be a short blog this week, and it is, but I can’t really end it without acknowledging the elephant in the room.

All I am going to say about Doric Park is that at an extraordinary meeting of Trowbridge Town Council on Thursday 4th January it was decided to cancel the project. I’ve no doubt that this won’t be the last we hear about it; certainly there was a strong desire across the whole council to review what had happened during the project’s life…. and then learn lessons from that review…. but that hasn’t happened yet.

That’s it for now, so until next time….. keep safe and please, be kind to each other.
