27 January 2024

Well, what a miserable week that was!

Over the weekend of the 20th and 21st, the “winter bug” that my wife and I had originally come down with between Christmas and the New Year came back with a vengeance!

I’d thought that I’d started to recover from it by the second week in January, but after a week or so’s respite from the lurgy, it returned worse than ever. To be fair, my wife hasn’t really had any relief from it all month, so any sympathy should definitely be directed in her direction.

From what I hear and from almost everyone I speak to, it’s a very pernicious bug this year that’s been hanging around for weeks. Apparently, six to eight weeks of coughing is not unusual!

Not nice, but hopefully not too serious for the vast majority. If you’re in any doubt, though, please seek professional medical advice.

Anyway, the end result of all this was that I had to send my apologies for the one event that I was scheduled to attend as Mayor last week, which was the Annual General Meeting of the Trowbridge French Twinning Association.

That was a shame. I think it’s fair to say that historically, the relationship between the town’s French Twinning Association and the Town Council has not been everything it could be, but I honestly think that this year we’ve all made efforts to put that behind us and start to effectively rebuild some broken (or at least rather rickety) bridges.

The contribution that the French “Twinners” make to our town cannot be underestimated, and I honestly believe that as a community, we all benefit from our links with our twin towns in Europe and North Africa.

Anyway, the main news from the French Twinning AGM was the election of a new chair for the coming year, in the person of Mr. Philip Powell. Phil takes the helm of a long-established and dedicated group of town residents but is backed and supported by an equally dedicated committee. The French Twinning Association puts on French-themed events throughout the year and organises visits to and from our twin town of Charenton-le-Pont (near Paris).

If you would like to find out more about our French twinning group, or indeed any of the other twinning groups in Trowbridge (linked with towns in Germany, Morocco, and Poland), please write to, giving your details, which we will be pleased to pass along to the relevant group.

That’s it for now, so until next time… keep safe, and please, be kind to each other.
