As Deputy Mayor, it was an honour to represent our Mayor (who was away attending his son’s wedding in Lancashire) at the Armed Forces Day held in the park last Saturday. An important part of that day was the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant. I had the pleasure of welcoming Lt. Col. McDermott, the Commanding Officer of the 14th Regiment Royal Artillery, who had kindly agreed to sign the Covenant on behalf of the Ministry of Defence; he was accompanied by Regimental Sergeant Major Gemma Bagley. Both our honoured guests enjoyed meeting and chatting with members of our town’s military and youth associations: the Royal British Legion, SSAFA, The Royal Air Forces Association, The White Ensign Association, the Army Cadets, the Royal Air Force Cadets, the Sea Cadets, and members of the public attending the event.

It was lovely to meet and be accompanied on the day by Rose, a member of Trowbridge Air Cadets, on her first engagement as the newly appointed Mayoral Cadet for this coming year. It was hard to believe that it was Rose’s first event, as her quiet confidence, diligence, and attention to detail were exceptional. Thank you, Rose.

I must thank the Officers at TTC who worked so hard to arrange this event, particularly Hayley, Vicky, and Stacey. Also, big thanks to those willing volunteers who helped them on what was a hot, sunny day.

The following day, I attended a Choral Evensong in Malmesbury Abbey, which was held to welcome their incoming Mayor to the community. The Abbey was undoubtedly a beautiful setting for this service.

It was a busy and really enjoyable weekend, and, as always, it was a privilege to represent our town.

The Deputy Mayor of Trowbridge
